Two tips to follow when doing renovations to a compact bathroom

Here are some tips to follow when renovating a compact bathroom.

Don't try to make the bathroom something it's not

The big blunder people tend to make when carrying out bathroom renovations on small bathrooms is trying to make them seem much bigger than they are. For example, you might have considered getting a bathtub installed, instead of just a shower, to make it seem like a full-sized bathroom. However, if you do this, you'll probably need to choose the tiniest bathtub available, which will not only be uncomfortable to use but will not accomplish anything in terms of making the room seem spacious. It will simply make this compact space feel overcrowded. It might also be impractical to put a bathtub (however small it might be) in the room, as there might not be enough floor space left after it's installed, for you to turn around when you're finished using the sink or to walk over to the toilet.

Given this, you should accept its compact size and pick size-appropriate bathroom fittings and fixtures. If you wanted a tub because you would have liked to use this bathroom for relaxing baths, you should install a really well-made (but modestly-sized) shower cubicle with etched glass doors and then fit an elegant rain shower-head attachment; this will make your experience of showering in it more enjoyable.

Don't be afraid to opt for dark, rich colours

The advice commonly given to those renovating small bathrooms is to incorporate white and other light shades into them to make these spaces seem larger. However, if your bathroom is truly small, then no amount of white paint will make it seem large. As such, if you've always found white or neutral colours to be uninspiring and dull, and you find dark, rich colours (such as plum, burgundy or petrol blue) very beautiful, you should not be afraid to paint the walls these colours or to install a suite or some flooring in one of these shades. This could add a luxurious, inviting look to the bathroom and will make its smallness seem cosy, rather than cramped.

If you're too afraid to go completely dark, you can always add these shades to the walls, fit a standard white bathroom suite and then lay light-coloured flooring. This will create some nice contrast and ensure that you achieve that cosy look whilst still having a few features that will brighten and open up the space.

About Me

Harold's Home and Garden Advice

Hello! I'm Harold, and I am a very keen gardener and home DIY enthusiast. I started this blog as a result of a conversation I had with a friend. We were chatting with each other about the latest jobs we were planning to complete. I was giving my friend some tips when he suggested that I write a series of articles so I could pass on my wisdom to others. I learnt all about home and garden DIY from a local contractor who used to complete work for me. Eventually, I realised I knew enough to carry out the work myself.
